Key Meta Changes

Research Tech Tree

The research tree has now replaced the old campaign level system. Previously, reaching a top-tier Rank XI tank required progressing through 22 campaign levels, with only 1-3 platoons available per level. With the new system, players can freely choose both the nation and the class of vehicles they want to research, along with several other advantages:

  • Freedom to choose which nation to research.
  • Faster progression toward top-tier vehicles.
  • Ability to select your upgrade path within the tree: MBT or SPAA, heavy tank or wheeled vehicle – the choice is yours.
  • Flexibility to switch branches or nations at any time.
  • Significantly quicker progression between vehicles within a branch compared to the old campaign level system.

The speed of obtaining top-rank vehicles has increased by more than six times!

In the research tech tree of your chosen nation, you'll select a branch and begin researching the first tank. You earn research points from battles, which are needed to unlock tanks. Once you accumulate the required points, you can order the researched unit using Silver Lions. Then you can select the next unit to research, and use the one you have already researched and purchased in battle.

You may choose to upgrade branches evenly or focus on a specific one. Nations can be switched at any time while continuing to progress through their tech trees. Units you’ve already researched remain unlocked for purchase, and those you’ve bought are always ready for battle.

Many of the nations currently available in the Tank Campaign will receive its own tab in future. At launch, the game will include the following tech trees:

  • USA (with select vehicles from France, Britain, and Israel temporarily added);
  • Germany (with select vehicles from Japan, Sweden, and Italy temporarily added);
  • USSR + Russia (with several tanks from China temporarily added).

Vehicles from all other nations, along with unique units that cannot yet be assigned to a specific national tree, will be placed in a special legacy branch.

Custom Platoons

A major change in the new “meta” is the removal of the pre-made platoon system. Commanders will now assemble their own combat platoons from four ground vehicles available in their Hangars. These platoons can include vehicles of any rank and any nation. However, keep in mind that matchmaking will be determined by the highest-ranked vehicle in the platoon.

Advantages of the new system:

  • Players can use only the vehicles that interest them.
  • Unit costs are reduced by 20-70% compared to pre-made platoons.
  • Only unique units are added to the game.
  • Greater tactical variety thanks to the ability to personally select platoon vehicles.
  • Regardless of the nation featured in the current Season, any vehicle obtained from Trophies can be used in battle.
  • Faster progress in Seasonal, Battle Pass, and event tasks, since all units used in battle count toward task completion.

Multinational platoons eliminate situations where, for example, you are researching US vehicles while the current Season features tanks from Japan and the USSR. Even if you received a tank from a Trophy, you couldn’t use it effectively because you were unable to form a competitive top-rank platoon.

As before, players can enter battle up to three times – either by deploying vehicles from additional slots or by using backups to re-enter with a vehicle that has already been used.

Slots and Crew

With the removal of the pre-made platoon system, we’ve also eliminated the need to upgrade characteristics and skills separately. Similar to the aircraft campaign, players will now have four slots to build their own platoon.

Each slot is operated by a separate crew, and upgrading their skills automatically boosts the performance of every tank assigned to that slot.

After each battle, you will earn crew improvement points that can be allocated to enhance fire rate, accuracy, survivability, crew swapping speed, and more. You can upgrade crews in all slots evenly or focus on specific slots – for example, tanks with autoloaders have a rate of fire unaffected by crew skills, so that attribute doesn’t need improvement. You can choose to max out specific skills first or upgrade all attributes in a balanced way.

In response to your feedback and concerns, we have decided to convert the experience you’ve already earned for your platoons into crew experience for their respective slots. The conversion will be proportional to each platoon’s current upgrade level.

Please note that the experience transferred from the old meta can only be allocated to the crews once. You may distribute it evenly across all crews or use it to fully upgrade a single crew to the maximum available level.

The screenshot above shows an even distribution of the maximum convertible experience, assuming the player owned all platoons and had upgraded each to level 25.

New Vehicles and Changes

With the transition from campaign levels to research trees, several ground units have been added to the game at once to create more balanced and engaging branches. Some are entirely new, while others are national variants of existing tanks. While we won’t list them all, these vehicles have been distributed across various ranks in the starter nations’ trees.

Furthermore, several changes have been implemented, causing some vehicles to have their acquisition methods altered or to be temporarily hidden. The full list of changes is provided below.

Now researchable:

  • KV-1S – was an event vehicle;
  • T-34-57, PT-76B, BTR-152D, M4A3E2 (76) W, M53/59 – were trophy vehicles.

Now blueprint vehicles:

  • Sd.Kfz. 234/4 – was an event vehicle;
  • KV-220, M4A5 – were premium "gold" vehicles;
  • TAM 2IP – was a platinum vehicle;
  • M4/T26, T28, T92, LeKPz M41, SU-122-54, Object 120, T-55AMD-1, 2S19M1, T54E2, XM1 (Chrysler), Maus, Zerstörer 45 – were trophy vehicles.

Now collectors vehicles and unavailable for new players:

  • T-28E, ZiS-12 (94-KM), ZiS-43, Pz.III L, Pz.IV F1, Sd.Kfz.251/21, M16 MGMC – were common vehicles.

Rank Expansion and Matchmaking

As noted in previous announcements, the game will introduce Rank XIII, rather than the expected Rank XII based on the current progression. After considering player feedback and concerns about facing much stronger opponents in the same battle, we decided to add this rank to allow for more balanced matchmaking.

In War Thunder Mobile, the rank distribution system was largely inspired by the well-known Battle Rating system from WT. However, it’s important not to confuse the two! WTM does not use Battle Ratings; instead, it has a Battle Rank system designed to improve the quality of matchmaking in battles.

With the expansion of ranks in "Tanks 2.0", units are now positioned more appropriately in the tech tree according to their combat effectiveness. This ensures that, in the new meta, tanks facing each other in a battle will be more evenly matched than before.

The matchmaking system in WTM is now largely similar to WT's, with one key difference: while WT allows a maximum spread of 7 BRs, WTM limits it to 6. This smaller spread means there is less of a difference in combat effectiveness between the top and bottom units in a WTM battle.

These changes aim to enhance opponent matching, create fairer team compositions, and deliver a more enjoyable gaming experience.

Changes to Premium Vehicles

Beginning with the "Tanks 2.0" update, premium vehicles will enable their owners to earn Golden Eagles! The higher the vehicle's rank, the greater the daily gold-earning limit.

Gold is earned based on the score achieved with a specific vehicle. You can receive a reward for every premium vehicle used in battle, with limits unique to each one. This means that once you reach the daily gold limit on a premium tank, you can continue earning gold with your other premium vehicles.

Trophies Update

Ground vehicles blueprints

Branches aren't the only way to get new ground vehicles. In addition to researching branch units, you can collect blueprints and order tanks from any nation.

  • from the Medium Trophy – these offer a chance to earn a small number of blueprints each time you open one, or a significant number of blueprints if you win the Guaranteed reward;
  • from the Big Trophy – these provide a greater number of blueprints per opening, or a significant number of blueprints if you win the Guaranteed reward;
  • from the In-game store – blueprints can be purchased for SL 6 times per day and any time for GE;
  • as rewards for some game events;
  • from offers and other ways.

With the introduction of blueprints, players can now obtain top-tier ground vehicles (currently Rank XIII) from seasonal trophies. This allows them to play high-rank vehicles almost immediately while continuing to research units in the national tech trees.

Another advantage of blueprint vehicles is that you don’t need to research an entire tech tree to obtain them, nor do you have to delay progressing with your favorite nation’s units just to acquire a single vehicle. Simply purchase blueprints for the units you’re interested in from the store or earn them through seasonal trophies. Over time, accumulating blueprints will ensure you have a sufficient stockpile for your next tank.

Seasonal Trophies

The contents and principle of obtaining rewards from seasonal tank campaign trophies have changed and will now be almost identical to those of the aviation and ship campaigns.

The new “meta” trophies will feature:

  • No decorators in the jackpot;
  • Top-tier vehicles of the highest rank.
  • A high chance to hit the jackpot and win the full seasonal vehicle;
  • A guaranteed reward of 700 blueprints for players who do not win the jackpot after 49 attempts.

Each season, you can obtain up to 4 new units: 2 standard tanks and 2 premium versions.

General Information: Medium and Big Trophies can award blueprints, a pre-made vehicle, a jackpot, and/or a guaranteed reward.

Jackpot: When opening a trophy, you have a chance to hit the jackpot – a red crate containing a vehicle from the current season. You will receive one pre-made seasonal unit you don’t already own (a standard version from the Medium Trophy and a premium version from the Big Trophy). Once you receive a jackpot, the guaranteed reward from that specific trophy can no longer be claimed.

Guaranteed reward: If you don’t hit the jackpot after 49 attempts with a Medium Trophy or 13 attempts with a Big Trophy, you are guaranteed to receive 700 blueprints for the standard seasonal unit on the 50th and 14th attempts, respectively. The jackpot remains available even after claiming the guaranteed reward.

Any excess blueprints are automatically converted into Golden Eagles. Once a blueprint vehicle is built, its blueprints are removed from all drop sources.

Collector's Trophies

Starting in October 2025, tank Collector's Trophies will be updated to include only Premium tank versions, similar to the Aviation and Fleet campaigns.

With the removal of the pre-made platoon system, vehicles from Collector's Trophies will now be obtained individually rather than as platoons. Drop rates and vehicle values will be adjusted to align with the standard cost of opening a Collector's Trophy in all campaigns.

Please review the contents of the tank Collector's Trophy carefully before opening it! All details, including the possible rewards and their chances, are available in the trophy opening window.

Q&A

The new “meta” is more than just a reorganization of vehicles into a more convenient order. Experience from the previous leveling system cannot be used to evaluate the new tank campaign. This is a complete overhaul of the campaign economy, including faster progression to top-tier vehicles and improved matchmaking. The new research tree system lets players obtain their desired top-tier tanks over six times faster, enjoy a smoother gameplay experience, and face more balanced opponents.

The new "meta" not only allows you to create platoons from your favorite vehicles of any nation but also introduces a redesigned experience system. As a result, reward multipliers have been rebalanced, reducing the cost of individual unique units by 20-70%. Additionally, premium vehicles now consistently earn Golden Eagles during battles.

The main goal of the new "meta" is to give players greater freedom and more opportunities. We hope you enjoy these improvements and make the most of your newfound flexibility for a more comfortable and engaging experience in your favorite game mode.

  • All ground vehicles purchased prior to the transition to the new “meta” will remain in your account and remain available for use in battle.
  • All common vehicles upgraded to Premium versions will remain in your hangar as Premium units within their respective branches and will now be able to earn Golden Eagles after battles.
  • All premium vehicles acquired through personal, seasonal, or limited-time offers will remain in your account as Premium units and will now be able to earn Golden Eagles after battles.
  • Some vehicles from previous seasons' trophies will remain in your account as collectible Premium units. These vehicles will either be temporarily unavailable for acquisition or will become obtainable through blueprints.
  • Vehicles obtained from Seasonal and Historical Trophies (excluding those that will become collectible – see above) will remain in your account as Premium units and will now be able to earn Golden Eagles after battles.

Once new national branches are added, units from the Legacy tab will either be moved to the appropriate research tree or placed in the nation’s tab outside the main branch.

A nation’s branch will also be integrated into its national research tree, with all units, both researched and purchased, retaining their current status.

Each new national branch will initially launch in Early Access and will later be made available to all players.

The option to upgrade tech tree vehicles for Golden Eagles at any time after researching them will remain in the new meta, with a reduced upgrade cost for each unit.

Blueprint vehicles can be upgraded only through Collector's Trophies or special offers, with prices adjusted based on whether the player already owns the standard version.

No vehicles acquired by players before the update will be removed. Common vehicles will be moved to the research tree while retaining their status (standard or premium). Platinum vehicles will remain as premium units in the nation’s tab outside the research branch or will be placed in the Legacy tab until new national branches are added. Camouflages will be preserved according to their upgraded status and nation, and will either be consolidated onto a single researchable unit (if they belong to common vehicles of the same nation) or result in an additional unit with a unique national or thematic camouflage.

Platinum platoons will be split into individual units and placed either in the nation’s tab (outside the research branches) or in the Legacy tab. They will keep their Premium status and unique camouflages.

The pricing principle is consistent across all modes: it is based on the estimated time needed to obtain a vehicle of the same rank through research.

This will be one of the next goals in the development of the Tank Campaign.

As explained in the "Expanded Ranks and Matchmaking" section of this article, the implementation of Battle Ratings (BR) as they exist in War Thunder is not currently planned for War Thunder Mobile. However, when matching opponents by rank, we rely on the WT BR system in an adapted form.

Yes. This feature allows players to use any vehicle they own and ensures seasonal vehicles remain relevant regardless of their main research branch. You can also choose to form platoons entirely from one nation if you prefer.

Some of these units will become researchable, others will be available through blueprints or for Golden Eagles, and some will turn into collectible vehicles. However, any units already obtained will keep their unique status and premium bonuses.

Yes, the progression chains are separated by vehicle type.

At the launch of the new "meta," players will receive a new slot-based crew improvement system along with the familiar Arsenal system for unlocking ammunition. In the future, however, we plan to introduce more diverse and modern modifications, including rangefinders, thermal imagers, armor screens, and more.

There are no such plans at the moment, but we do not rule out the possibility of adding this option in the future.

Almost every unit will be placed in its corresponding spot within the national research tree.However, a few units have been deliberately omitted to prevent the branch from becoming cluttered.

For the release of "Tanks 2.0," there are no plans to change the gameplay of aircraft in tank battles.

There are plans to create a more unified system that works the same across all campaigns. However, we do not plan to remove levels entirely.

Vehicles will not be duplicated across different ranks. However, duplicates may exist between nations if justified by balance and historical accuracy.

Yes. Moreover, you can have multiple versions of this tank: a standard version, a premium version, and a collector's version if you obtained the tank before the moving to the new system.

The process will be similar to the progress conversion in the Fleet Campaign: everything that was available for purchase but was not bought will be marked as researched. However, to purchase a unit, you may need to research and buy the previous vehicle in the branch.

We will carefully analyze the battle performance statistics of units within their ranks and make corresponding adjustments to their placement within the research tree ranks.

Similar to the Aviation Campaign: international platoons, any tiers (but matchmaking considers the highest vehicle rank in the platoon), you can add vehicles of any class, as well as standard, premium, and collector versions in the same platoon.

There are currently no plans to change the tank respawn system: each platoon will still have 4 units, with a maximum of three respawns per battle, and backups can be used to return to the same vehicle.

Nations that lack enough vehicles for a complete research tree will be temporarily put on hold while we work on adding new units. In the future, we plan to release full new nations in the same way the Japanese aviation branch was introduced. Players will retain access to vehicles they have already obtained or researched from these nations, but new research and purchases will remain unavailable until the full trees are released.

There will always be players with certain advantages – more free time, faster reaction speed, or access to platinum vehicles. We do not anticipate any significant imbalance, even if 1% of players use top-tier vehicles in a given rank. However, we will not artificially restrict players or prevent them from using vehicles they have already earned simply because they lack enough units to form a complete nation-specific lineup.

Most of these units have been moved to the Legacy tree and will no longer be available for new players to research in the corresponding nation’s tree. In other words, the vehicles remain, but only as collector’s items.

Players will still receive all four tanks, but instead of a single platoon, they will be provided as separate individual units.

The cost of a vehicle is primarily determined by the time required to research a vehicle of a similar rank and level. On average, prices will be reduced by 20-70%. This reduction is not due to replacing a 4-unit platoon with individual vehicles, but because researching a single tank now takes less time than researching an entire platoon. Additionally, reward multipliers have been adjusted: for example, top-tier vehicles now earn more Silver Lions per battle and will also generate Golden Eagles. Considering these changes, along with the removal of duplicate “copy” vehicles from the cost calculation, the actual value in the 2.0 system has not decreased and has even increased in some cases.

The final price of seasonal offers will be reduced. We will add keys if needed to balance the value, and the offer will include 1 new tank and consumables.

The new Tank Campaign is currently in Open Beta. The content of the branches, the cost and reward rates, ranks, some vehicle design features, camouflages, trophy content, and ways to obtain blueprints may be changed. Screenshots in this text are a work in progress and may contain placeholders or temporary data.

Commanders, we wish you good luck and glorious battles in War Thunder Mobile (WTM)!
