[Coming Soon] Fw 190 A-8 – at the peak of its popularity!

The most mass-produced modification of the famous “Focke-wulf”!

Historical Note

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8 modification appeared in early 1944. The fighter received a water-methanol injection system, which allowed for a short-term increase in engine power, as well as reinforced armor on the nose of the aircraft.

This modification became the most mass-produced of the Fw 190 fighter family.

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: can keep a very high speed, powerful armament.
  • Weaknesses: mediocre maneuverability.
  • Opportunities: fast, powerful attacks from high altitude.
  • Threats: temptation to maneuver horizontally, loss of energy.

In battle

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8 fighter is a true classic of piston-powered aviation from the final period of World War II. An inhabitant of high altitudes, the Focke is capable of gaining astonishingly high speed in a dive while maintaining controllability. Its powerful cannon armament is just right for a short hard hit. This is a real master of energy combat!

The A-8, like the other 190s, performs best at medium and high altitudes. This is where the fighter's high-speed potential is fully realized. This is also where it hunts high-altitude bombers. The best tactic for the Fw 190 to deal with fighters is the “falcon strike” – aka “boom-and-zoom” – a dive attack from high altitude and immediate retreat back up for another strike. First, the Fw 190 can withstand enormous loads and is well controlled in a dive. Secondly, the armament of four 20mm autocannons and a pair of large-caliber machine guns with a heavy second burst weight is ideal for such a sharp and powerful strike.

The third reason why the Focke-wulf shouldn't get involved with turns is its mediocre maneuverability and tendency to lose power quickly. The most common mistake of inexperienced Fw 190 pilots is to lose altitude in the excitement of the chase and enter into a turn battle near the ground. Here the fighter is almost always doomed, so altitude reserve is the best thing!

The Fw 190 A-8 has limited suitability for armored vehicle destruction missions. However, four autocannon is a serious argument, especially for light and unarmored vehicles. In addition, this modification can take into battle large missiles Wfr.Gr.21. They were invented to destroy bombers, but when hitting ground unit, there is a good chance to destroy the enemy with one missile.
