Historical Note

The AMX-40 was a further development of the AMX-32 model. The tank was created by the French company GIAT due to interest from the Middle East. In 1983, the first prototype was built and demonstrated at the Eurosatory exhibition. In the next two years, three more prototypes were built. All the constructed prototypes, which differed mainly in power-train, took part in tests.

Despite the promotional campaign launched, the manufacturer failed to attract foreign buyers, and the French Army did not show interest either. In 1990, the AMX-40 project was closed.

AMX-40

The AMX-40, a French main battle tank, is a big step up from the AMX-30 family to the modern Leclerc. A tank with brilliant dynamics, stabilized powerful 120mm cannon and coaxial 20mm autocannon. Let's meet!

The tank is designed with spaced and combined armor. It provides reliable protection of the tank in the front projection from small HEAT and autocannon fire. However, the AMX-40 does not hold up well against large tank guns and ATGMs, just like all other MBTs of the “Western” school of tank design of its time. The excellent mobility of the vehicle compensates for its moderate protection. It is provided by a 1300-horsepower engine – the tank has a high power density, quickly accelerates to 70 km/h and easily overcomes any off-road and hills.

A special line is worth noting the armament of the AMX-40. The main gun of the Frenchman will be a 120-mm gun with a two-plane stabilizer, which includes HEATFS and APFSDS with excellent armor penetration.

The AMX-40 can penetrate the armor of any opponent, many of which can be hit anywhere. Complementing the main gun coaxial with its 20-mm autocannon – it can damage the modules of the enemy tank in a firefight at short ranges or quickly destroy lightly armored vehicles.

The Vextra 105 wheeled support vehicle prototype was developed by GIAT in the 90s. The vehicle will be an excellent light recon vehicle, thanks to its high speed and 105mm cannon with good armor-piercing shells.

MEPHISTO

The MEPHISTO wheeled ATGM carrier is armed with a four-tube HOT anti-tank missile launcher on the roof of the hull. Good speed and the ability to fire from behind cover without exposing the vulnerable hull to fire.
