[Coming Soon] F7F-3 Tigercat: The Sea Devil

This US Navy heavy fighter features excellent armament and a high dive speed!

Historical Note

In 1944, the F7F Tigercat became the first twin-engine fighter to be adopted by the U.S. Navy. The Tigercat series didn’t take part in World War II combat operations. They were used as reconnaissance aircraft with aerial survey equipment installed. The F7Fs were improved even after they were put into service.

The third version was a deep modernization of the previous series. The aircraft received new engines that improved its performance at high altitudes, as well as an enlarged tail section. The F7F-3 was produced from March 1945 to June 1946.

F7F-3 (Rank VIII)

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: 4 guns and 4 machine guns, high speed, can carry bombs and huge rockets.
  • Weaknesses: large in size.
  • Opportunities: low-altitude attack, hunting for bombers.
  • Threats: high speed fighters.

In battle

The F7F-3 Tigercat is a twin-engine heavy fighter. It stands out from its “classmates” with its excellent speed performance, powerful forward-firing weapons and a variety of suspensions for a wide range of combat missions.

The F7F-3 has even more powerful engines than the earlier aircraft in the series. The aircraft features excellent horizontal flight speeds and very high dive speeds. The Tigercat handles well over the entire speed range, but loses power quickly in active maneuvers. The best tactic to use with this American twin-engine aircraft is to “boom and zoom”: dive from altitude to a selected target and then dive back to altitude without engaging in a turn battle.

The F7F-3 is superbly armed. Four 20mm autocannons are complemented by four large-caliber Browning machine guns – the weight of the second salvo exceeds 8 kg! Moreover, the Tigercat is perfectly prepared for assault missions: the aircraft can carry 500 to 2000 lb bombs, HVAR rockets, well-known to American pilots, as well as the new Tiny Tim anti-ship rocket, so powerful that they can be used to attack bases!
