The American “Liberator”, the German “Gustav” and the Soviet Yer-2 – glorious company for fighting at Rank VII!
The B-24D Liberator, a heavy bomber developed by the American Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in 1940, stood out from the famous “Flying Fortresses” with its more powerful engines and longer wings. The “D” variant featured upgraded engines and a new lower ball turret, among other improvements. At the start of World War II, over 2,600 B-24D bombers were produced.
The Liberator builds on the concept of the Flying Fortress, a massive strategic bomber with a substantial payload and formidable defensive firepower. The B-24D can carry up to 8,000 pounds of bombs and is armed with 11 heavy-caliber machine guns for protection. Its low speed and large size make survival at low altitudes challenging. However, at high altitudes, few fighters can approach the bomber without enduring relentless fire from its gunners.
The G-6 variant, introduced in February 1943, became the most widely produced model in the Willy Messerschmitt series of fighters. Designed for versatility, the Bf 109 G-6 was capable of handling a wide range of missions, from low-altitude combat to intercepting bombers. It was manufactured in both standard and tropical versions, the latter featuring sand filters. Numerous variations were created, focusing primarily on a diverse array of armament configurations.
The “Gustav” is an exceptionally versatile fighter. Pilots can tailor it for various missions, choosing between 20mm and 30mm cannons and a broad selection of suspended armaments, including bombs (up to 250kg) and large Wfr.Gr.21 rockets. True to the Messerschmitt lineage, the G-6 excels in vertical maneuvers and, unlike earlier versions, performs well in horizontal combat as well.
The Yer-2 originated from Robert Bartini’s Stal-7 civilian aircraft project. These planes were part of the group that bombed Berlin in 1941. The version equipped with ACh-30B diesel engines became one of the most advanced variants of this bomber.
The Yer-2 was built as a strategic bomber, and it fulfills this role effectively in War Thunder Mobile. Although slow and challenging to maneuver, the Yer-2 (ACh-30B) (e) excels in payload capacity, carrying up to 5,000 kg of bombs in various calibers, ranging from 100 to 1,000 kg. Compared to earlier variants, this version boasts significantly improved defensive armament, including two heavy machine guns and a 20-mm ShVAK autocannon mounted in the upper turret!
