Historical note

In 1993, the Slovakian tank manufacturer ZTS Dubnica faced economic difficulties and began developing an upgraded version of the T-72M1 for export. In collaboration with the French SFIM and Belgian SABCA, the T-72M2 Moderna project was created. It included a new fire control system, a panoramic commander's sight, a modernized engine, and DYNA explosive reactive armor. Initially, the project envisaged two 20 mm KAA-200 cannons on the sides of the turret. However, during development, they were replaced with a single 30 mm 2A42 automatic cannon to combat light armored vehicles and helicopters.

Despite its technological promise, the project encountered serious difficulties. The cost of modernization proved too high compared to the basic T-72, which reduced its appeal to potential buyers. In addition, there were cheaper alternatives on the market, including Russian upgrades. The Slovakian army also failed to show sufficient interest, preferring a gradual transition to Western-made vehicles. As a result, mass production never began – only a few prototypes were built to demonstrate the vehicle's capabilities.

T-72M2 Moderna (Rank X)

The upcoming content update will introduce one of the most interesting modifications of the T-72 tank family — the Slovakian T-72M2 Moderna. Dynamic protection, an auxiliary autocannon, and a new highly effective armor-piercing shell!

The T-72M2 Moderna is a unique symbiosis of Soviet platform and Western technology. The tank's protection is reinforced by the DYNA explosive reactive armor, which is effective against HEAT and, partly, against kinetic shells.

A lot of attention should be paid to the weapons of the upgraded tank. In addition to the standard 125 mm 2A46M gun with a new Slovakian APFSDS TAPNA (penetration over 500 mm), the Moderna has been equipped with a 30 mm 2A42 automatic cannon in an independent mount, significantly increasing its anti-light armored vehicle and low-flying air target capabilities.

To compensate for the increased weight, the T-72M2 Moderna received a new engine. The tank is only slightly inferior in dynamics to the best Rank X MBTs, but retains the T-72 family's common drawback of low reverse speed.

The Moderna is a truly versatile tank that gives the commander almost unlimited tactical flexibility. It can take a hit and penetrate the armor of any tank in its rank. The 30 mm autocannon is also very useful, as it can almost instantly lock onto and destroy lightly armored vehicles or fire at vulnerable modules in enemy tanks between salvos from the main gun.

T-80B

Another brilliant versatile vehicle! The tank has reinforced armor with ERA packages, is highly maneuverable, and is equipped with very good APFSDS and ATGMs in its arsenal!

BMP-2M

The Russian BMP-2M with the Berezhok combat module is a recon vehicle. It includes an automatic 30 mm cannon, an automatic grenade launcher, and four guided missile launchers — ATGM (tandem) and ATGM-VT for light vehicles in cover are available!

ZSU-23-4V

The SPAAG of the platoon is the well-known “Shilka” – a tracked chassis, four 23 mm autocannons, and very high fire density, effective against aircraft and light recon vehicles!
