[Coming Soon] J6K1: known as “Squall”

The Big and Medium Trophies contain the maneuverable Japanese fighter with powerful weapons!

Historical Note

In 1942, Kawanishi simultaneously began developing two promising fighters for the Imperial Navy: the N1K1 seaplane and the J3K land-based aircraft. The J3K, a completely new design, but faced an engine selection conflict. the navy insisted on the powerful Mitsubishi Ha-43, while the designers favored the more affordable Nakajima Homare.

These disagreements stalled the project until 1944. Construction of a modernized prototype, the J6K1 Jinpū ("Squall") fighter, only commenced after the Homare 42 engine entered service. However, the J6K1's development was ultimately deemed unnecessary, as the already successful N1K1 shared similar performance characteristics. An attempt to create a high-altitude interceptor based on the J6K1 was ultimately halted by Japan's surrender.

J6K1 (Rank VIII)

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: Six 20mm cannons and large-caliber machine guns, highly maneuverable, bomb-carrying capability.
  • Weaknesses: Below-average acceleration, wing-mounted guns.
  • Opportunities: Excellent in horizontal dogfights, quickly eliminates aircraft of all sizes, and can effectively engage ground targets and vehicles.
  • Threats: High-altitude fighters and interceptors.

In battle

The J6K1 Jinpū, a large yet highly maneuverable late-war fighter, offers pilots decent flight characteristics and formidable armament for a Rank VIII aircraft. The Squall is coming!

Equipped with what was likely the best armament in its category, the J6K1 featured six (!) automatic 20mm Type 99 cannons, housed in the wings and supplied with an enormous 1,200 rounds. Additionally, two large-caliber machine guns were integrated into the wing roots. Its incendiary shells are particularly effective against aircraft, while armor-piercing belts can damage light ground vehicles.

With its considerable wingspan and powerful armament, the J6K1 might initially be mistaken for a heavy fighter at first glance but don’t be fooled! While it may lack strong acceleration and climb rate, it excels in horizontal maneuverability. This agility is its greatest weapon against high-altitude and high-speed opponents. If the J6K1 can draw them into a horizontal dogfight, escaping its tight, spiraling turns will be a serious challenge for any enemy.

However, the J6K1's capabilities extend beyond fighter dogfights. Its powerful armament allows it to quickly down strike aircraft and bombers with just a few well-placed shots. Equipped with a pair of 250 kg bombs and armor-piercing belts, the J6K1 also becomes a formidable high-speed attacker capable of engaging ground targets with deadly efficiency.
