Leopard 2 PT-16/T14 mod. Platoon (Rank X)

Historical note

In the early 1980s, as part of the development of upgrades for the Leopard 2 tank, the Krauss-Maffei company presented an experimental prototype that combined the chassis of the serial Leopard 2 with a new PT-14 mod. turret. The key feature of this turret was the installation of an automatic loading system, which reduced the crew to three people (commander, gunner, engineer-driver) and significantly increased the firing rate. However, despite the potential advantages, the automatic loader was rejected due to doubts about the reliability of the system under conditions of intensive use, the risks of reduced crew survivability in case of ammunition detonation, and the general preference for the traditional four-member crew configuration for task distribution. The single prototype built is preserved in the exhibition of the Military Technical Museum in Koblenz, Germany.

Leopard 2 PT-16/T14 mod.

The Leopard 2 PT-16/T14 mod. is the ideal tank for daring, aggressive action. The vehicle retains all the key advantages of the series, such as excellent mobility, fast turret rotation, high accuracy, and excellent shells, while the automatic loader increases the tank's rate of fire to 15 rounds per minute from the first 9-round ammunition rack.

The main drawback of the Leopard 2 family is its limited protection — the sides of the hull are particularly vulnerable, and the front of the turret can be penetrated by almost all top vehicles.

The automatic loading system allows this Leopard 2 modification to reload its 120 mm gun in just 4 seconds! This feature of the Leo will be useful to the commander both in duels and during flanking raids, where the PT-16/T14 mod. will be able to destroy several enemy tanks before they even notice it.

The PT-16/T14 mod. isn't coming alone — here are the other vehicles in Germany's new platoon!

Boxer MGS

The Boxer MGS is a technology demonstrator developed by the Belgian John Cockerill company. A turret with a 105 mm gun is mounted on the highly mobile Boxer IFV chassis. The vehicle can reach speeds of over 100 km/h and fires DM63 shells, one of the most effective armor-piercing shells of that caliber.

Wiesel 1A2

The Wiesel 1A2 “tank destroyer” is a very compact and fast vehicle with a launcher for TOW-2 series anti-tank missiles: conventional, tandem, and remote-detonated missiles that explode above the roof of an enemy tank's turret!

Gepard

The platoon's anti-aircraft gun is a veteran of high-rank battles, the German Flakpanzer Gepard, featuring a pair of rapid-fire 35 mm cannons on a Leopard 1 tank chassis!

RN Dante Alighieri (Rank III)

Historical note

Dante Alighieri became the first Italian dreadnought, a ship that embodied the bold engineering ideas of its time. Italian engineers created an innovative design with twelve 305 mm guns in three four-gun mounts, which surpassed the armament of many of its contemporaries. The ship also featured a strong power system that allowed it to reach speeds of up to about 23 knots, and efficient armor.

Launched in 1913, Dante Alighieri almost never saw combat during WWI because of Italy's careful naval strategy. Her most significant mission was the Durazzo bombing in 1918, where she never actually fired on the enemy. During the interwar period, the Dante Alighieri served as a test platform for new fire control systems, but the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 sealed its fate: in 1928, the ship was decommissioned and scrapped.

In battle

The RN Dante Alighieri's main armament consists of twelve 305 mm guns, three in each of four turrets. The battleship can easily deal with any enemy's armor at her rank, but the big caliber means a relatively long reload time. This is where the fast-firing secondary 120 mm guns come into play.

The RN Dante Alighieri's protection can be called satisfactory. The armor is good against salvos from cruisers, but from battleships it will struggle.

As for mobility, the speed of the RN Dante Alighieri is quite typical for early 20th century dreadnoughts — the ship is slow, although it surpasses its historical competitors in maximum speed. Commanders should choose their route in advance, as the ship simply won't have time to regroup quickly.

The best tactic for using the RN Dante Alighieri is to provide fire support for allied cruisers and destroy the most dangerous ships in the enemy team. Plan each salvo carefully, and this majestic battleship, named in honor of the outstanding poet of the early Middle Ages, will bring you glory in naval battles!

Bf 109 E-7 (Rank III)

Historical note

The Bf 109 E-7 was the final and most advanced serial modification in the Emil line, featuring the DB-601N engine for higher altitude and reliability. Production of the E-7 began in the fall of 1940, and a total of 438 units were produced. Unlike other modifications, it was practically not supplied to Germany's allies: only a few machines were received by Romania, and five demilitarized ones were purchased by Japan in 1941 for testing.

Despite the introduction of more advanced modifications (the F and G series), the Bf 109 E-7 remained in service until the middle of the war, participating in operations on the Eastern Front and in North Africa.

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: a versatile fighter with good flight characteristics and not bad weaponry.
  • Weaknesses: It may be inferior in speed and horizontal turning to the best fighters in its class. Small ammunition load.
  • Opportunities: especially effective in vertical turns at medium altitudes.
  • Threats: faster and more maneuverable aircraft.

In battle

The famous Messerschmitt Bf 109 of the E-7 series is the most advanced Emil in service with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The aircraft can be called a classic German fighter from early during WWII. It combines responsive control at all speed ranges, good armament, and quite satisfactory speed characteristics.

Like all members of the “109” series, the Bf 109 E-7 performs well at medium altitudes, where it can either gain altitude to eliminate threats from above or attack fighters in the lower levels of combat with short dive attacks. It is best to use the Bf 109 E-7 in vertical maneuvers, where the aircraft has clear advantages over its opponents in the form of good energy saving and responsive controls.

The Emil is well armed, with two 20 mm guns and a pair of machine guns. The guns are located at some distance from the fuselage's longitudinal axis and require the pilot to keep a perfect firing distance. Another feature of this fighter is its rather small ammunition load for the cannons. It is best to fire in short bursts and retreat to a safe altitude in time to reload.

The versatile Bf 109 E-7 will give variety to your experience of early Japanese fighters, most of which tend to favor horizontal maneuvering action.
