[Coming Soon] F2G-1 – The Super-Charged Corsair

One of the fastest propeller-driven planes ever built, the F2G-1’s legacy continued well beyond the war. Known as the Super Corsair, it later became a racing aircraft and still survives to this day!

Historical Note

You can't discuss the F2G-1 without highlighting its impressive engine. The Super Corsair was powered by a colossal 28-cylinder engine, delivering an astonishing 3,000 horsepower. The Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major holds the title of the largest piston engine ever produced, dominating the ranks of the highest-performing engines of World War II.

The Super Corsair was more than just raw power; it also required enhancements to its design to manage the high torque generated by its massive engine. The airframe was refined, and the tail surfaces were enlarged to maintain the aircraft's agility without sacrificing speed. Although the F2G-1 entered service a bit too late to impact the war effort, it found considerable success in the post-war air racing scene, dominating several major competitions of its time.

F2G-1 (Rank VII)

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: Highly accurate 12.7 mm caliber machine guns and excellent engine performance.
  • Weaknesses: Engine performance declines at altitudes above 4 km.
  • Opportunities: Effective for diving attacks from 2-3 km and low-altitude dogfights against less agile aircraft.
  • Threats: Vulnerable to high-altitude fighters and interceptors.

At rank VII, the F2G-1 lives up to its legacy with exceptional engine performance, but it has even more to offer. Few fighters from this era can match the Super Corsair’s guns, which remain accurate and deadly even beyond 1,000 meters. Additionally, the ample supply of tracer rounds helps you track and engage your targets effectively.

While the F2G-1 excels in boom-and-zoom tactics, it is not confined to a single playstyle. The aircraft thrives in low- to mid-altitude engagements, where its engine maintains optimal power and acceleration. However, climbing too high can reduce its effectiveness, so it's best to avoid stalling. By leveraging the strengths of your engine and guns, you can dictate the pace of every air battle.

Each of the six 12.7 mm caliber machine guns is equipped with 400 rounds, providing some of the best ballistic performance in its tier. In addition to its machine guns, the F2G-1 can carry a variety of heavy secondary ordnance, including 250 lb, 500 lb, and 1,000 lb bombs, as well as high-velocity aircraft rockets and air-to-ground Tiny Tims.
