This is a new Japanese premium platoon, featuring two modifications of the Type 74 main battle tank, an excellent IFV and a fast-firing SPAAG!
The Type 74 replaced the obsolete M47 Patton tank, which Japan had received from the USA. At the time of its creation, the Type 74 featured some of the most advanced developments and technology in tank design, as it included composite armor, a controlled hydropneumatic suspension, the most advanced shells for the L7 gun, and advanced electronics. It had night vision devices that also appeared on later variants. The Type 74 was in service with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces until 2000, when they were finally replaced by more advanced tanks.
In the next major content update, War Thunder Mobile commanders will be able to purchase this new premium VIII rank platoon, which includes two versions of the famous Japanese MBT at once.
The leader of the platoon is one of the later modifications of the Type 74, created in 1993 as part of the vehicle service life extension program. The Type 74 (G) received more modern electronics and side skirts for better protection against shaped charge weapons.
In the game, the Type 74 (G) is light and fairly fast tank, similar to other Western MBTs. This tank’s armor protection is not that high, but its excellent speed, combined with superior firepower means it’s best fitted for an aggressive combat style!
This tank is armed with a 105 mm gun from the famous L7 family – the gun is accurate, fast-firing and stabilized. The choice of shells is quite good – two types of APFSDS with very high armor penetration and HEATFS.
The Type 74 (G) tank is very versatile: it can drive to the flanks of enemies, be the first to capture a control point, hide in an ambush or be an effective sniper in large open locations. The commander’s main task is not to engage in long firefights, but instead to surprise enemies and to understand the current combat situation well. It’s a matter of skill!
Let’s take a closer look at the rest of the “family” of the warrior Types.
Another member of the Type 74 MBT family. Unlike the platoon leader, the Type 74 (F) has slightly less mobility and a slightly stronger lower frontal hull plate. Otherwise it is the same: fast, dangerous, aggressive!
The Type 89 will be one of the best scouts at its rank - high speed, a 35mm autocannon that can penetrate almost any tank, and excellent ATGMs in two launchers on the sides of the turret.
The Type 87 SPAAG, which is already known to experienced commanders, will also prove itself in the new platoon – a pair of 35mm Oerlikon cannons can easily crush both aircraft and light armored vehicles!
*Platoon vehicle lineup, vehicle specifications and camouflages are still under development and may differ from those in this article.
The Type 74 (G) (Rank VIII) will be available from the Big Trophy of the Tank Campaign or from an offer after the start of the Season.
