The superdreadnought SMS Bayern – heavy, slow, and armed with 380mm cannons – will be the new "trophy" ship of the upcoming season!
The battleship SMS Bayern was the lead ship in a series of four superdreadnoughts with 380mm artillery. Laid down in December 1913 and completed in July 1916, it did not participate in the decisive Battle of Jutland. In late 1917, during Operation Albion, SMS Bayern struck a mine and was forced to return to Kiel for lengthy repairs. In November 1918, most of the German High Seas Fleet was interned at Scapa Flow. Following the terms of the signed peace treaty, SMS Bayern was scuttled along with other German ships in the harbor.
The formidable SMS Bayern will join War Thunder Mobile in the upcoming “Guns to Battle!” Season. This heavily armored, slow-moving sea monster will be a decisive force in any battle. Today, we’ll delve into this engineering marvel and offer some advice to future commanders. Moorings up, we're underway!
The SMS Bayern is an uncompromising dreadnought, boasting as much armor and firepower as it can carry. Its main armament consists of eight 380 mm guns housed in four turrets. Additionally, the battleship features sixteen 150 mm guns in casemate turrets along the sides, serving as mine countermeasure armament. The broadside salvo of the SMS Bayern inflicts immense damage, capable of sinking some cruisers with just two or three accurate salvos.
The SMS Bayern excels in defense and survivability. Its main areas, which typically sustain the most damage in battle, are protected by thick armor that only other powerful battleships can penetrate. Combined with a large crew, this heavy armor makes the SMS Bayern one of the most durable ships in the game!
Of course, its heavy armament and colossal armor significantly affect its speed. The ship is very slow, takes a long time to accelerate to its maximum speed, and has a very long turning radius. Commanders must plan their route well in advance and prepare their guns accordingly.
Typical of early battleships, SMS Bayern has no reconnaissance aircraft. The ship is practically devoid of anti-aircraft guns - a pair of slow 88mm cannons cannot effectively repel a raid. Due to its size, it will be a prime target for enemy pilots, so coordinating with teammates for cover from aircraft and destroyers is crucial.
Despite these drawbacks, the Bayern remains a formidable force in battle. Its powerful cannons inflict significant damage and hold their ground, increasing the team's chances of victory the longer it remains in action.
The battleship SMS Bayern (Rank IV) will be available from the Big Trophy of the Ship Campaign or from an offer after the start of the Season.
