The first USSR missile cruiser “Groznyy” (“Project 58”) will appear in War Thunder Mobile with the release of the upcoming Seasonal Update of the game.
The “Project 58” ships were laid down as destroyers, but during their completion and arming, they became the first ships of the new to the Soviet Navy “missile cruiser” class. The “Project 58” cruisers were the first in the USSR to receive an anti-ship missile system. Tests of a new type of weapon on the lead ship of the series, the cruiser “Groznyy”, were attended by the General Secretary of the Party – Nikita Khrushchev. In total, four ships of the new class were built out of 16 planned, one each for each fleet of the Soviet Navy.
Three of those built remained in service until the early 90's, the last ship of the series was decommissioned in 2002.
The “Groznyy” missile cruiser will be the new top missile cruiser in the USSR Navy. This light, mobile ship has a powerful missile armament, solid shorter-range artillery and even torpedoes. Let's take a closer look at this non standard ship shall we?
The main armament of the “Groznyy” will be the P-35 anti-ship and “Volna” missiles. It is worth noting that historically the “Groznyy” was equipped with two four-barrel launchers of P-35 anti-ship missiles. However, due to the features of the FCS system, the full effective salvo in the autonomous guidance mode could be formed from 4 missiles, and the rest had to be manually guided by the operator.
Since the principle of autonomous targeting is now implemented in the game, we decided to limit the single salvo of P-35 missiles to four missiles at a time. The launchers are rotated towards the sides of the cruiser due to the fact that it was not equipped with a gas venting system. The missiles were launched only in this position so that the venting gases went overboard.
Along with the latest missile armament for its time, the “Groznyy” also mounted more modern naval artillery positions - a pair of double-barrel AK-726 automatic 76-mm guns, which are effective against lightly armored targets at closer combat ranges. In addition, the “Groznyy” has a torpedo armament consisting of two triple-tube torpedo launchers.
The obvious disadvantages of the ship include low survivability – the superstructures were not engineered from steel, but of aluminum-magnesium alloys in order to improve the stability of the ship. Low survivability, however, is more than compensated for by its formidable arsenal.
The missile cruiser “Groznyy” will be one of the best ships in the game – due to its powerful missiles and automatic guns it will be able to hit any target in battle, and excellent navigational performance will help commanders to find themselves in positions where the enemy least expects them and then be able to move back to cover quickly.
The “Groznyy” (Rank VI) is available after you reach level 28** in the ship campaign. You can upgrade the campaign level for Golden Eagles instantly to gain access to this ship faster than other players, or you can level up in battle.
Please remember that as soon as Campaign Level 29 becomes available, Level 28, 28* and 28** platoons will merge into a single Level 28. Vehicles purchased for Golden Eagles will remain as a premium even after the levels are merged. The final coefficients on the three vehicles will be the same as the level 28 vehicles.
