[Coming Soon] Challenger Mk.2 Platoon: Introducing X Rank!

The game's first Rank X platoon features the legendary Challenger MBT and its formidable team!

Challenger Mk.2 Platoon (Rank X)

Historical note

The Challenger replaced the Chieftain in the British Army. While the Chieftain was considered one of the best MBTs of its time for its unmatched firepower and protection, its lack of mobility prompted the need for a faster, more maneuverable tank.

The new project was based on the Shir-2 tank, initially developed for export to Iran. It was equipped with a powerful 120mm gun, Chobham composite armor, a new Rolls-Royce engine, and a hydropneumatic suspension, all of which greatly enhanced its mobility and off-road capability. Production of the Challenger began in 1983 and concluded in 1990, with around 420 tanks built in total.

Challenger Mk.2

In War Thunder Mobile, the Challenger will spearhead the game's first Rank X platoon. As a 3rd generation main battle tank, it represents a significant leap in firepower and defense compared to earlier British tanks.

The Challenger Mk.2 is equipped with a precision-stabilized 120mm rifled gun, offering a reload time of up to 5 seconds for the first-stage ammunition. Commanders can choose between two types of APFSDS rounds for piercing armor, HESH rounds for targeting lightly armored vehicles, and smoke shells for tactical cover.

One of the Challenger's key advantages is its enhanced protection. The tank features a complex armor system, combining steel homogeneous armor with Chobham composite armor. However, it has some vulnerabilities, including a weaker area near the commander's sight on the turret and a less-protected lower front hull section.

Compared to other high-ranking tanks, the Challenger isn't the fastest on the battlefield. It excels in defensive positions, where its advanced armor and accurate, rapid-firing cannon give it the endurance to survive extended engagements and claim victory.

Now let's take a look at the other armored vehicles featured in this new top-tier platoon!

TTD

The South African TTD serves as a technology demonstrator for an advanced tank, developed during a time of foreign arms embargo. Despite its somewhat bulky appearance, the TTD is a dynamic and fast tank, equipped with highly effective APFSDS ammunition and robust protection against both APFSDS and HEAT rounds from the front.

Desert Warrior

The British Desert Warrior IFV boasts high speed, strong protection against HEAT, including rockets, and impressive armament. It is equipped with a 25mm autocannon that uses armor-piercing belts and features two TOW-2B ATGM launchers for added firepower!

ZA-35

Next up is the South African ZA-35 SPAAG. With the trademark breakneck speed of the Rooikat platform and its rapid-firing 35mm automatic cannons, this vehicle is an excellent asset for adrenaline-fueled raids on enemy rear areas!
