The Big and Medium Trophies contain the first Dutch missile submarine in the game.
Forming the backbone of the Royal Netherlands Navy's submarine fleet, the Walrus-class submarines are considered among the world's most advanced non-nuclear submarines. Their development began in 1978 to replace the outdated Dolfijn and Zwaardvis-class vessels. Four boats: Walrus, Zeeleeuw, Dolfijn, and Bruinvis were built at the Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij shipyard, entering service between 1990 and 1994. Despite budgetary and technical difficulties, including a fire on the lead boat, the Netherlands successfully created powerful submarines with modern detection and weapon systems.
A modernization program for the Walrus-class boats began in 2013, aimed at extending their service life until at least 2027. The upgrade involved enhancements to reconnaissance systems, ergonomics, and technology, including sonar modernization and the addition of new emergency systems. In 2023, the lead ship was decommissioned and scrapped for parts to maintain the three remaining submarines.
The HNLMS Walrus-class (Dutch for “walrus”) is joining the German Navy branch in War Thunder Mobile as a new missile submarine! Today, we’ll explore this addition and take a closer look at the opportunities it brings.
Powered by a diesel-electric plant, the HNLMS Walrus class has a more limited autonomy than nuclear submarines. Despite this, its performance characteristics are impressive; its underwater and periscope depth speed is very good, allowing it to outperform many nuclear submarines.
Like other top-rank submarines, the HNLMS Walrus-class carries missiles: Harpoon anti-ship missilesadapted for launch from torpedo tubes. This standard weapon for modern Western ships has already proven its effectiveness in War Thunder Mobile!
For close-range combat and surprise attacks, the HNLMS Walrus class is also armed with fast Mk. 48 torpedoes, some of the best in their class.
*Vehicle specifications and camouflages are still work in progress and may differ on release.
The HNLMS Walrus-class (Rank VI) can be obtained in War Thunder Mobile (WTM) from Medium or Big Trophies in the Ship Campaign with the start of the new Season.
