[Coming Soon] R3 T106 FA platoon: A crazy double-barreled machine!

📦 The Medium Trophy contains an incredibly fast fighting machine with recoilless anti-tank guns!

R3 T106 FA Platoon (Rank VI)

Historical note

In 1981, the Italian company OTO Melara developed a prototype of a specialized anti-tank version of the R3 wheeled armored vehicle for the Carabinieri and ground forces. The initial design featured two 80 mm Breda Folgore recoilless guns, but these proved inadequate against modern tank armor. As a result, the designers switched to the American 106 mm M40 recoilless rifles, first testing a single gun and later mounting two on a rotating turret.

Tests revealed significant issues: the powerful recoil during lateral firing caused the vehicle to tilt dangerously, and the suspension couldn’t handle sustained use. Attempts to add a stabilizer failed due to structural overload. As a result, the R3 T106 FA remained a prototype. However, insights gained from the project were later applied to the development of modern Italian wheeled combat vehicles.

R3 T106 FA

Get ready for a fan-favorite platoon, led by the R3 T106 FA wheeled combat vehicle! This compact, highly maneuverable unit packs two 106mm recoilless guns but offers virtually no protection. Expect pure adrenaline!

The R3 T106 FA, a member of the R3 Capraia wheeled combat vehicle family, is armed with a pair of American M40 106mm recoilless guns. These are mounted on a rotating turret atop its hull. The guns fire two types of ammunition: anti-tank grenades capable of penetrating almost any tank or SPA of its rank, and HESH shells for quick destruction of light targets.

The standout feature of the R3 family is its exceptional agility. Thanks to a strong engine, short wheelbase, and high power-to-weight ratio, the R3 T106 FA can accelerate rapidly, reach speeds of nearly 130 km/h on flat roads, and execute sharp maneuvers with ease. However, its mobility decreases significantly off-road, so it’s best to stick to smooth terrain free of potholes and debris where few vehicles can match its speed. Keep in mind, the short wheelbase can cause the hull to sway when firing on the move, making accurate shots difficult. It’s best to slow down ahead of time or engage enemies at close range.

As you might expect, the R3 T106 FA’s exceptional maneuverability comes from its low weight and minimal armor protection. In fact, this compact vehicle is so lightly armored that even heavy machine guns—including those mounted on aircraft—can take it out. Its survivability relies entirely on constant movement and surprise attacks. To succeed with the R3, approach from the flanks and set up daring ambushes where the enemy least expects them. Luckily, its small size makes it ideal for slipping into tight, unexpected positions.

The other vehicles in the R3 T106 FA platoon share their leader’s philosophy – prioritizing speed and firepower above all else. Let’s meet the rest of the team!

C13 T90

The C13 family of infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) was developed as an alternative to the American M113 – a modular tracked platform featuring a troop compartment and designed to accommodate various weapon systems. The C13 T90 prototype was outfitted with a 90 mm Cockerill Mk.3 gun capable of firing HEATFS, HESH, and smoke rounds. While its armor offers only light, fragmentation-resistant protection, the C13 T90 stands out for its impressive speed and excellent off-road mobility.

BTR-80A

This Russian fighting vehicle, now in Hungarian service, is an absolute classic. Equipped with a 30mm cannon, it features excellent speed and a high rate of fire, though it has relatively large dimensions and light armor. It proves highly effective for tank support and in hunting down enemy light armored vehicles.

ZSU-57-2

The formidable Soviet ZSU-57-2 also served in the Hungarian army. Built on a tank chassis and armed with twin automatic 57 mm cannons, it can fire both HE and APCBC shells, more than enough to punch through the side armor of nearly any tank!

The R3 T106 FA Platoon (Rank VI) will be available in War Thunder Mobile (WTM) in the Medium Trophy of the Tank Campaign with the start of the new Season.
