Platoon K9 Vidar (Rank VII)

Historical note

The K9 Versatile Indirect Artillery (VIDAR) stands as a testament to the capabilities of South Korean heavy industry and serves as a source of national pride for Sweden. Currently, the K9 family comprises over 50% of the tracked howitzer market, with the VIDAR playing a significant role in this success as an export variant. Time and again, this self-propelled artillery gun has demonstrated its ability to meet the demanding operational requirements of countries such as Poland, Norway, Finland, Estonia, and Turkey.

Fun fact: Vidar (spelt “Víðarr”) is a Scandinavian deity who, according to legend, will slay Fenrir at Ragnarok and avenge Odin's death. A great name for a vehicle to crush enemies with a single blow!

K9 Vidar

One of the key factors behind the K9’s success is its rapid deployment and repositioning. Although the VIDAR is heavier than its NATO counterpart, the M109 Paladin, it boasts a faster speed of 65 km/h and a higher power-to-weight ratio, thanks to its 1,000-horsepower German engine. This edge in mobility makes VIDAR well suited for delivering brief but deadly barrages with its 155 mm cannon, and repositioning to avoid return fire.

The K9 VIDAR packs a powerful punch. The OE F3 HE is great for dealing damage to soft targets, while the M107 (PF) serves as the heavy hitter with 61 mm of armor penetration. This round is particularly effective for hitting enemies behind cover, or low-flying aircraft.

Please note that the proximity fuze is armed only after the round travels at least 300 meters. Once armed, it will detonate within 3 meters of any obstacle it encounters, be it a real target or ground clutter. Below 300 meters, the M107 (PF) functions as a conventional HE round, exploding on impact.

As with all artillery units, distance is your strength. Allow others to scout ahead and find a good sniping position, but keep an eye on your flanks. You have minimal protection in close combat, so it’s best to avoid it altogether.

Once your team has tagged a few enemies, start raining fire but be careful not to draw enemy fire to your position. Luckily, the VIDAR’s mobility allows you to quickly reposition both forward and in reverse without wasting too much time.

Now, let’s highlight some other notable vehicles in the K9 VIDAR’s platoon.

STRV 103A

The Strv 103A is a unique main battle tank, best suited for players with a tactical mindset. Although it’s not much of a brawler like some of its contemporaries, it is an unparalleled duelist. It excels in frontal engagements, effectively controlling chokepoints or narrow fire lanes. Few MBTs can trade punches with the Stridsvagn and live to tell the tale.

U-SH 405

More of an armored car than a light tank, the U-SH 405 is designed specifically for hit-and-run tactics. Its compact design makes it easy for the vehicle to sneak around the map and ambush unsuspecting targets with its dual drum-fed rocket launchers.

VEAK 40

The VEAK 40 is an optimal choice for both hunting light vehicles and keeping the skies clear. Armed with twin 40 mm autocannons, it delivers serious firepower. Place your shots well, and you may even stand a chance against medium-armored foes – provided that you aim for their weak spots.

IJN Agano (Rank II)

As one of the last light cruisers to join the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Agano class epitomized Japanese cruiser design during the interwar period. The IJN Agano was both a sea hound and shepherd, equipped with the deadly “long lance” type torpedoes and spearheading destroyer squadrons in escort and anti-submarine (ASW) missions.

The IJN Agano was designed for range and speed, and thus the ship boasted a leaner hull and deck line. While its main armaments were relateively modest, the 2x4 610 mm torpedo tubes more than compensated, making the IJN Agano a fearsome contender on the high seas.

Being equipped with two catapult-launched float planes, gives the IJN Agano can gain early intelligence by scouting the skies before being detected on enemy radar. Besides, these two planes can deal significant damage to enemy submarines in the right hands!
