Historical note

With the opening of the front in Southeast Asia, the Japanese command realized the importance of Iwo Jima’s strategic position. The island became a base on the sea and air route from Japan to Southeast Asia. The strategic importance of this island was enormous!

The first attacks on this island by the Americans began on June 15, 1944. On February 19, 1945, after bombing and shelling from ships, U.S. Marine divisions began landing on Iwo Jima.

Despite skillful defense, Japanese soldiers were constantly forced to retreat. On February 23, the Americans, with heavy losses, managed to capture the highest point of the island — Mount Suribachi and erected the U.S. flag on it, and on February 26 the airfield was captured.

Officially the island is considered captured on March 26, 1945, when U.S. troops with heavy losses repelled the last counterattack of Japanese soldiers. After the capture of the island, the U.S. was able to build an airbase on Iwo Jima, which was used as an intermediate point in raids on Japan.
