[Coming Soon] Yak-23: Speed and Maneuverability

The Big and Medium Trophies contain a Soviet jet fighter with excellent maneuverability and powerful cannons.

Historical Note

In 1947, the Soviet government tasked the Yakovlev Design Bureau with developing a single-seat straight-wing jet fighter. To save time and resources, engineers employed a modified semi-monocoque fuselage with an unpressurized cockpit, the RD-500 engine (a copy of the British Derwent V) and upgraded landing gear, while armament was limited to two 23 mm NR-23 cannons.

The first Yak-23 prototype took to the skies on July 8, 1947, but was lost just one week later after a collision with debris from a Tu-14 bomber. Tests of the second prototype, which continued through the end of the year, demonstrated that the aircraft possessed good maneuverability and was capable of holding its own against contemporary fighters.

Mass production of the Yak-23 was delayed, commencing only in October 1949. A total of 313 aircraft were completed by March 1951. Their service with the Soviet Air Force proved short-lived – as early as 1953, they began to be transferred to allied nations of the socialist bloc.

Brief Analysis

  • Strengths: excellent acceleration, good maneuverability, and high top speed.
  • Weaknesses: tricky 23 mm cannon ballistics.
  • Role in battle: a pure interceptor – fast, with superb acceleration and responsive handling across the entire speed range.

In battle

At Rank IX of War Thunder Mobile aviation, few aircraft combine blistering acceleration, excellent maneuverability, and a high top speed in a single package. The Yak-23 is exactly that machine. This jet fighter has no ambitions of being a jack-of-all-trades – its mission is air superiority, and it pursues that mission with single-minded efficiency.

The Yak-23's greatest assets are its power-to-weight ratio and maneuverability. The powerful engine delivers exceptional acceleration, allowing you to gain altitude quickly and run down enemies in level flight. Top speed approaches 1,000 km/h, placing the Yak-23 among the fastest fighters in its class – and throughout the entire speed range, the aircraft remains fully responsive.

These advantages come at a cost, however: the twin 23 mm cannons have tricky ballistics at range and require time to master.

Tactics for the Yak-23 revolve around its core strengths – speed and maneuverability. At the start of a battle, climb early and maintain an energy advantage to attack from above. Use the exceptional acceleration to disengage rapidly if the situation turns against you. If you need to break off a pursuit, the Yak-23 makes escape considerably easier than most competitors. Master the ballistics: lead your shots and fire in short, controlled bursts – especially at long range.
