[Coming soon] USS Bainbridge: a nuclear-powered missile ship!

The Big and Medium trophies contain an American nuclear-powered cruiser.

Historical Note

USS Bainbridge was a unique ship in the US Navy, becoming the first nuclear-powered frigate specifically designed to accompany the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Enterprise and the cruiser Long Beach. The idea of a nuclear-powered destroyer originated in the 1950s, when the US Navy faced the problem of limited autonomy of conventional ships. Design work began in 1957 with strict requirements: armament similar to that of Leahy-class frigates, a speed of 30 kts, and a nuclear power plant. However, technical difficulties led to an increase in displacement from the planned 6,000 to 7,600 tons. The cost of construction exceeded $160 million, compared to $59 million for a conventional Leahy. Two nuclear reactors were installed on the ship, providing virtually unlimited range. Its historic circumnavigation as part of the Sea Orbit task force in 1964 clearly demonstrated the revolutionary capabilities of nuclear-powered ships – a 65-day voyage without a single refueling.

Over 34 years of service, the cruiser went from Vietnam, where it earned eight battle stars for air defense of aircraft carrier groups and search and rescue operations, to the Mediterranean in the 1990s. After undergoing two reactor refuelings (in 1967-68 and 1974-77), the Bainbridge remained combat-ready until its decommissioning, completing its service with counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean Sea in 1996.

USS Bainbridge is coming to the game in one of its later modifications with an extensive arsenal. The ship carries two four-tube Harpoon missile launchers, as well as a pair of two-tube Standard missile launchers. USS Bainbridge can destroy enemy ships with two or three salvos that didn’t fire countermeasures.

However, the combat capabilities of the USS Bainbridge don't end there. For close encounters, the nuclear-powered ship deploys two triple torpedo tubes with fast 324 mm torpedoes.

Despite its impressive arsenal, the USS Bainbridge is hardly slow. It maneuvers easily between rocks and islands, making it difficult to target, and quickly hides after attacking to reload.
