Historical Note

The F2A Buffalo was the first mass-produced monoplane designed for carrier operations in the U.S. Navy, entering service in 1939. This successful aircraft was produced in large numbers and was popular among foreign operators.

A celebrated Buffalo pilot, John Smith Thach (call sign "Jimmy") commanded a fighter regiment that flew combat missions from the aircraft carriers Saratoga and Yorktown. Thach eveloped the tactics that effectively countered Japanese Zero fighters. The "Thach Weave" maneuver required an American pilot being pursued by a Zero to regroup, positioning the enemy aircraft within the firing range of a fellow U.S. squadron member.

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: High maneuverability, good armament, good speed.
  • Weaknesses: Outpaced by the fastest monoplanes and less agile than the most nimble biplanes
  • Opportunities: Versatile, excels in 'boom-and-zoom' tactics.
  • Threats: Enemy fighters.

In battle

Introducing a special F2A-1 in John Thach's unique camouflage! This early version of the American carrier-based fighter saw widespread use both in the USA and internationally.

In combat, the Buffalo can outrun most biplanes and outmaneuver most monoplanes. Its high performance allows pilots to overcome many challenging situations, and its armament of three heavy machine guns and one rifle-caliber machine gun makes it a threat to any enemy of its rank.

The F2A-1 handles well in both vertical and horizontal maneuvers. Despite its versatility, F2A-1 pilots should exercise caution in combat, as faster and more agile aircraft exist at adjacent ranks.
