The Big and Medium trophies contain a new Chinese export main battle tank with an autoloader and excellent shell selection.
The Chinese VT4 main battle tank was developed by the NORINCO corporation as a deep modernization of the earlier export MBT-2000 (Al-Khalid). Its design incorporates technologies and components proven on serial Chinese tanks like the ZTZ-96B and ZTZ-99, including the modern FY-2 explosive reactive armor. A significant step was the creation of a fully domestic powerplant: a 1200 HP diesel engine coupled with an automatic transmission.
The project was unveiled in 2012, and a working prototype was presented to the public at the 2014 Zhuhai Airshow. The VT4 has found success on the export market: its largest customer is Pakistan, with an order for 680 units. The tank has also been supplied to Thailand and Nigeria.
The VT4 is an evolution of the Al-Khalid MBT, already familiar to many commanders. The tank received enhanced protection, a new engine, and a versatile ammo selection for any situation. Its design philosophy carries a distinct Soviet legacy. The layout, crew placement, gun caliber, and feeding mechanism are strongly reminiscent of the T-72 series. However, Chinese engineers have offered their own take on the concept.
The domestically-produced 125 mm gun is fed by a large 22-round carousel autoloader, providing a reload rate of 6.7 seconds. The shell variety is impressive: a HEATFS shell, two types of HE shells (with contact and proximity fuzes), two types of APFSDS with up to 577 mm of penetration, and even a tandem-charge ATGM! APFSDS will be your primary anti-tank rounds, but carrying other shell types is highly recommended for unconventional situations, such as engaging lightly armored targets, enemies behind cover, or unpredictably moving vehicles.
The VT4 utilizes modern passive protection solutions: a combination of steel, composite arrays, and FY-2 explosive reactive armor blocks. The turret front is well-protected, but you must be aware of its weaker spots, such as the gun mantlet area. It is advisable to turn the turret slightly during reloads and use cover that reliably conceals the hull and the driver's compartment.
The old T-72 issue of slow reverse speed was already solved on the Al-Khalid, so the VT4 has no problems with mobility either. Fitted with a domestically-produced engine and transmission, the tank can reach nearly 80 km/h forwards and about 20 km/h in reverse. Its good power-to-weight ratio allows for active maneuvering and engaging in close-quarters duels.
The VT4 is a modern tank suitable for any playstyle. It has no glaring weaknesses but possesses clear strengths: a high rate of fire and a vast selection of shells.
The Premium variant is an extra tank for your hangar! The premium tank maintains the same performance as the standard variant, though it comes in a unique camouflage. With this premium tank you’ll be able to enjoy faster Silver Lion and Research Point gains, and earn some Golden Eagles in your battles.
If you’re lucky enough to unlock both the premium and the standard variants, you will be able to use them both in the same battle!
