Historical note

In the late 1950s, Norinco engineers began developing a light tank based on the Type 59, which had already been in production. The design concept included a lightweight construction and the reduction of the main caliber gun. The development work was completed in 1962 and in the following year, the new tank was successfully put into serial production.

In addition to the needs of the Chinese Army, the new vehicle was actively exported to other nations. The tank took part in several armed conflicts, including the Vietnam War.

The Type 62 was withdrawn from PLA service in 2013, but still remains in service with some foreign operators.

Type 62

In the upcoming seasonal update for War Thunder Mobile, a new platoon featuring Chinese armored vehicles will be coming to the game, led by the Type 62 light tank! This mobile light tank is a daring scout and cunning sniper. Let’s break down the main features of the vehicle and take a look at the other vehicles in this new platoon!

The Type 62 was a successful attempt to create a light vehicle based on a medium tank. It lost some of its armor and equipment, and to help further reduce the weight, the gun was also changed. The result was a tank with an impressive power-to-weight ratio that successfully compensated for the reduced gun caliber with effective shells instead.

Commanders will find a wide range of different shells for a variety of combat situations for the tank’s 85 mm gun. The most interesting is the APBC shell with high damage and HEAT-FS that can penetrate any encountered enemy at the same rank. It’s quite fortunate that there is almost no special shaped-charge protection at rank VI.

Instead of prioritizing armor protection, the Type 62 has excellent mobility characteristics instead, allowing it to get to advantageous firing positions first!

Type 62 commanders should actively capture points, as the characteristics of this tank allow for an aggressive playstyle in urban locations. And thanks to the small size of this tank, you’ll be able to easily hide while reloading.

IS-2 (1944)

The Soviet IS-2 is an indispensable choice for defending map positions. This is thanks to its very strong armor and 122 mm gun that can fire shells that contain a high amount of explosives. The disadvantages of this Soviet tank is its slower mobility and long reload time.

PLZ83

The PLZ83 is a great self-propelled howitzer that features HE shells with an explosive charge of 9 kg in TNT equivalent and even HE-VT shells! The PLZ83 is best used from ambush positions or from cover by allied tanks, as it has little armor of its own.
