[Coming soon] Sea Hawk FGA.6: Ten Points of Strike

The Big and Medium Trophies contain a British strike aircraft combining powerful armament with excellent low-altitude speed.

Historical Note

The British carrier-based Sea Hawk fighter was developed in the early postwar years as a private venture by the Hawker company. The project initially began as an attempt to adapt the piston-engined Fury fighter for a turbojet powerplant. Despite a lack of early interest from the military, Hawker independently pressed ahead with development, producing the P.1040 prototype. Following its maiden flight on September 2, 1947, the aircraft earned a official production order by the end of 1949. The first production Sea Hawks entered service with the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm in 1953, with total production eventually exceeding 500 aircraft.

One of the final and most advanced modifications was the FGA.6 variant, which was equipped with a more powerful Rolls-Royce Nene Mk.103 engine. By the early 1960s the Royal Navy had begun retiring the Sea Hawk, though the aircraft continued to serve with other nations. Its most significant foreign operator was India, where Sea Hawks remained in active service until the early 1980s.

Brief Analysis

  • Strengths: Strong low-altitude top speed, powerful forward-firing armament, and a large selection of suspended ordnance.
  • Weaknesses: Sluggish acceleration.
  • Role in battle: Purpose-built as a jet strike aircraft, yet capable of holding its own in air-to-air combat.

In battle

The Sea Hawk FGA.6 is a first-generation British carrier-based jet, purpose-built for strike operations yet equally capable in air combat.

The Sea Hawk FGA.6 is powered by a turbojet engine optimized for low-altitude performance, enabling a top speed of nearly 1,000 km/h at sea level. This makes it exceptionally comfortable at low altitude, where most opponents must climb to unlock their full speed potential. For an aircraft whose primary role is strike operations, this advantage is doubly valuable.

The Sea Hawk FGA.6's arsenal is another significant advantage. Ten external hardpoints support an exceptionally wide range of suspended ordnance – from unguided rockets to 225-450 kg bombs. The forward-firing armament is equally impressive: four 20 mm Hispano cannons prove effective both for strafing ground targets and holding their own in air combat.

The Sea Hawk FGA.6's most notable drawback – typical of early jet aviation – is its sluggish acceleration. The aircraft is slow to build up speed in level flight, and its rate of climb is similarly sluggish.

For a strike aircraft, however, this is not a significant disadvantage – and in air-to-air combat, its acceleration is comparable to most early jet aircraft in the game.
