Historical note

Development of the fourth-generation Project 885 Yasen nuclear-powered submarines began in the USSR in the late 1970s. Designed for a more versatile fleet, these submarines were intended as universal combat units capable of replacing several specialized classes, from torpedo to missile carriers. The concept aimed to create a vessel equally effective against surface, underwater, and coastal targets using cruise missiles.  Construction of the lead submarine, K-560 Severodvinsk, started at Sevmash in 1993. However, due to the challenges of the post-Soviet era and continuous modernization, it was not launched until 2010.

Submarines of the original and upgraded Project 885 currently form the backbone of the strike capabilities of the modern Russian submarine fleet. Their powerful armament, high automation, and exceptional stealth enable them to carry out missions effectively in both coastal waters and the open ocean.

Pr.885 Yasen (Rank VI)

A formidable hunter emerges from the depths: the Project 885 Yasen nuclear submarine, armed with supersonic Onyx anti-ship missiles. The Yasen is set to become one of the most powerful combat submarines in the game!

In War Thunder Mobile, the Pr. 885 represents the pinnacle of Soviet submarine development. Its primary weapon is the supersonic Onyx anti-ship missile system, launched from vertical silos. Each salvo fires four missiles, delivering incredible speed and a devastating warhead capable of heavily damaging or even destroying most surface ships in a single strike.

The Pr.885 Yasen's torpedo armament includes 533mm torpedo launchers equipped with modern torpedoes. Notably, these launchers are positioned behind the central control room, a departure from traditional bow placement.

Like all modern submarines, the Yasen possesses high underwater speed and extended submerged endurance, granting commanders tactical flexibility ranging from cautious ambushes near cover to aggressive coordinated attacks. However, it’s important to note that the Yasen lacks anti-aircraft guns and countermeasures against guided missiles. As a result, stealth and the element of surprise remain its greatest assets.
