The Big and Medium Trophies contain an American carrier-based strike fighter combining powerful armament with excellent turning ability.
The F9F Panther became the first jet aircraft produced by Grumman to enter service with the U.S. Navy. Its development began with the G-75 (XF9F-1) project, designed for a carrier-based night fighter competition – one it ultimately lost to the Douglas F3D Skyknight. Grumman subsequently redesigned the concept entirely, producing a single-engine fighter fundamentally different from its predecessor.
The new aircraft was equipped with wingtip fuel tanks and leading-edge slats, which noticeably improved its flight performance. The prototype first flew on November 21, 1947, though carrier trials did not begin until May 1949. Despite the delays, the F9F Panther entered service and within a year was seeing active combat in Korea.
It became the most numerous carrier-based aircraft in the Navy during that conflict, flying both ground attack and air superiority missions. The F9F remained in U.S. service until 1956, when it began to be replaced by more advanced aircraft – among them its own swept-wing development, the F9F-8 Cougar.
The carrier-based F9F-2 Panther is one of the iconic aircraft of the Korean War. In close-quarters air combat, the F9F-2 does not disappoint: four 20 mm cannons mounted in the forward fuselage allow you to engage enemies accurately and with devastating effect – even at ranges where many other jets begin to lose accuracy.
The Panther's greatest advantage, however, lies beneath its wings – the aircraft was designed from the outset as an attack platform. Its suspended ordnance selection is impressive: HVAR rockets for precision strikes, Tiny Tim unguided rockets originally developed for anti-ship operations, and a bomb lineup ranging from 100 lb light bombs to hefty 1,000 lb bombs. There is no shortage of options for a fully loaded strike run.
In a clean fighter configuration, the F9F-2 feels confident in the air – a typical representative of the early jet age. With a strike loadout, however, flight performance drops noticeably: acceleration becomes sluggish, climb rate suffers, and top speed falls to levels comparable to the fastest piston fighters of the late war period. Yet even in this heavy strike configuration – particularly with a pair of 1,000 lb bombs on board – the Panther can work wonders at low altitude, neutralizing ground targets with an effectiveness that puts many dedicated bombers to shame.
Ultimately, the F9F-2 Panther leaves its pilot with a genuine choice of tactics: engage in turn fights with enemy fighters and feel the rush of early jet combat, or focus on strike missions at a speed that many rivals struggle to match.
