[Coming Soon] F2H-2: The Phantom's Heir!

The Big and Medium Trophies include an American jet fighter-bomber equipped with eight weapon pylons.

Historical Note

Development of the F2H Banshee began in March 1945 as an evolution of the U.S. Navy’s first carrier-based jet fighter, the FH-1 Phantom. However, the design soon transformed into an almost entirely new aircraft. The prototype made its first flight on January 11, 1947, showcasing an impressive climb rate. In August 1949, the F2H-1 set a naval fighter altitude record of 52,000 feet. The production F2H-2 variant was equipped with fixed wing fuel tanks and eight weapon pylons.

During the Korean War, the “Banshee” served mainly as a fighter-bomber and escort aircraft. Although it recorded no confirmed aerial victories, it proved highly reliable and durable – only three F2H-2s were lost to anti-aircraft fire. By the late 1950s, it was gradually replaced by newer supersonic aircraft, though its reconnaissance variants remained in service until 1965, and until 1962 in Canada.

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: Exceptional top speed, four 20 mm automatic cannons, access to bombs and rockets, and good maneuverability.
  • Weaknesses: Poor acceleration and climb rate.
  • Opportunities: Performs well in dogfights against both jet and piston-engine fighters, capable of serving as an interceptor or fast attack aircraft, effective in both air-to-air and ground-attack roles.
  • Threats: Highly vulnerable when climbing or accelerating after losing energy.

In battle

The F2H-2 Banshee is among the first U.S. jet fighters in War Thunder Mobile, and one of the most successful. It handles exceptionally well at high speeds, offers solid maneuverability, and its versatile, powerful armament makes it effective across a wide range of combat missions.

The F2H-2 Banshee shares many characteristics with other early jet aircraft. Its engines limit acceleration and climb rate, but its ability to sustain high speed in level flight provides a clear advantage over late-era piston-engine fighters.

The F2H-2 offers several notable advantages. Its robust, well-engineered design and relatively short wings enable it to achieve speeds that exceed those of many aircraft at its rank. Moreover, the “Banshee” maintains excellent handling across its entire speed range, even at top speed. It performs confidently in duels against both jet and top-tier piston-engine fighters, outmaneuvering the former and outpacing the latter.

The F2H-2 is well-armed with four 20 mm automatic cannons mounted in the nose. Additionally, the “Banshee” can carry bombs and rockets on its pylons, making it effective in both air combat and ground attack missions.
