[Coming soon] F-84G-21-RE: The Jet Thunder

The Big and Medium Trophies contain an iconic American jet fighter-bomber, ready to unleash its thunder on the battlefield.

Historical note

Development of the F-84 Thunderjet fighter-bomber began in 1944 at Republic Aviation as a jet-powered successor to the piston-engined P-47 Thunderbolt. Its maiden flight took place in 1946, and the aircraft officially entered service with the United States Air Force in 1947. The most advanced and mass-produced straight-wing variant was the F-84G model, adopted in 1951. It featured a more powerful J35-A-35 engine, an in-flight refuelling system, an autopilot, and, most notably, the capability to carry tactical nuclear ordnance, making it the world's first fighter-bomber with this ability. In total, approximately 4,500 straight-wing F-84 Thunderjets were built, with the G modification accounting for the most, with around 3,000.

A significant portion of the production was organized in NATO countries (France, Italy, Belgium) under the Mutual Security Program. These aircraft were also supplied to allies outside of NATO, including Yugoslavia, Iran, and Taiwan. The F-84G saw active service throughout the 1950s, before being finally phased out by the late 1970s, giving way to more modern designs.

F-84G-21-RE (Rank IX)

Brief Analysis

  • Strengths: high top speed, good rate of climb, excellent primary and suspended armament.
  • Weaknesses: mediocre manoeuvrability.
  • Opportunities: one of the best early jet aircraft, suitable for both dogfighting against any opponent and ground attack missions.

In battle

There aren't many aircraft in War Thunder Mobile's jet roster that can confidently handle any combat task. The American F-84G-21-RE is a welcome exception. This Thunderjet is truly great in battles at Rank IX! It is equally ready for fierce high-altitude engagements and swift strikes against ground targets, offering the pilot a rare degree of freedom of action for its time.

The key advantages of this American jet are its outstanding flight performance and formidable firepower. It boasts high maximum speed and an excellent rate of climb, allowing it to dictate terms to any adversary – or even several at once! Its primary armament of six fast-firing 12.7 mm M3 machine guns with a very generous ammunition supply grants the F-84G-21-RE great flexibility in aerial combat: you can fire long bursts even at considerable distance. Its impressive array of secondary armament also deserves special mention, featuring small HVAR rockets, large Tiny Tim anti-ship rockets, and most importantly, bombs ranging from 100 to 1000 lbs.

Successful tactics for the F-84G are built on patience and the ability to leverage your strengths. Your domain is the vertical plane and speed. Gain altitude, use your climb rate advantage to attack from above. Engage at high speed, deliver a burst from your machine guns, and, without getting drawn into a prolonged turning fight, disengage to regain altitude. The reason is simple: in a manoeuvring battle, especially in the horizontal plane, the Thunderjet quickly loses energy and forfeits one of its key advantages, which is speed. Also, don't hesitate to switch to ground attack duties, as you can quickly clear several ground targets and then re-join the aerial fray.

It's fair to call the F-84G-21-RE one of the most pilot-friendly early jet fighters, and can forgive some mistakes made by the pilot. In skilled hands, its potential for speed, firepower, and mission flexibility is fully realized, allowing it to dominate both in the sky and on the ground.
