[Coming Soon] F-80C-10: A Jet Age Classic

The Big and Medium Trophies contain an American multirole jet fighter equipped with six fast-firing cannons.

Historical note

The F-80C Shooting Star was the most advanced variant in the series and saw extensive service during the early stages of the Korean War. The “C” modification featured an upgraded Allison J33-A-35 engine, rapid-fire M3 machine guns, and the ability to carry drop tanks, significantly extending flight endurance.

The F-80C Shooting Star was rapidly overtaken by the more advanced F-86 Sabre and was ultimately retired from service in 1958.

Brief Analysis

  • Strengths: Heavy armament with six fast-firing machine guns, strong horizontal maneuverability, and high versatility.
  • Weaknesses: Low climb rate and weak acceleration compared to other jet fighters.
  • Opportunities: Effective in dogfights against less agile jets and well suited for ground-attack missions using rockets and bombs.

In battle

The F-80C-10 Shooting Star is among the latest variants of the first mass-produced American jet fighter. It is highly versatile, performing effectively in air combat at all altitudes and remaining capable in ground-attack roles.

The F-80C-10’s main strengths are its powerful armament and its notably strong maneuverability for an early jet fighter. Its nose houses six rapid-fire, heavy-caliber M3 machine guns, providing accurate, high-rate fire even at long range and during sustained bursts. In addition, the “Shooting Star” can carry underwing ordnance, a relatively uncommon feature for jets of its era. For ground-attack missions, the aircraft is equipped to use unguided rockets and bombs weighing 250, 500, or 1,000 pounds.

In flight, the F-80C-10 has a relatively low climb rate and modest acceleration. However, its solid horizontal maneuverability allows it to perform boom-and-zoom attacks and to effectively engage in turning fights, particularly against less agile jet fighters.

The F-80C-10 Shooting Star is valued for its versatility. It is not confined to a specific altitude band or combat task. In capable hands, it functions as a reliable multirole fighter, effective in both air combat and ground-attack roles.
