[Coming Soon] Challenger 2 (2F): A Titan of Defense!

The Big and Medium trophies contain a British main battle tank equipped with upgraded armor.

Historical Note

The Challenger 2 Dorchester Level 2F variant was developed to counter urban warfare threats and first entered service in 2004.

The protection suite features added Chobham composite armor panels on the turret and hull, along with Dorchester Level 2F composite armor blocks. To defend against man-portable anti-tank weapons like RPGs, slat armor is fitted to the hull sides and rear section.

SWOT Analysis

  • Strengths: Strong protection and a fast first-stage ammunition-rack reload.
  • Weaknesses: Mediocre mobility.
  • Opportunities: Excels when using terrain for hull-down positions and performs well in urban combat.
  • Threats: Susceptible to hits on the lower frontal plate and driver’s optic, and at a disadvantage in open terrain.

In battle

The British Challenger 2 (2F) main battle tank was designed with modern urban warfare in mind and is renowned for its exceptional protection. The Dorchester Level 2F variant offers enhanced defense against chemical energy (HEAT) threats while maintaining its other key strength – a powerful main gun with a high rate of fire and highly effective ammunition.

The Challenger 2, protected by its advanced Chobham composite armor, is a formidable opponent on the battlefield. When positioned behind low cover, breaching its frontal armor demands top-tier shells and precise targeting of its few weak points. The 2F variant enhances this already impressive protection. Additional Chobham armor blocks reinforce the front of the hull, while newer Dorchester armor panels have been added along the sides of the hull and turret. Slat armor now shields the rear sections, offering improved defense against man-portable anti-tank weapons. In-game, these upgrades grant the Challenger 2F increased resistance to non-tandem ATGMs and chemical energy (HEAT) rounds fired from tank cannons.

The Challenger 2’s signature 120 mm L30A1 gun is a precise, fast-firing weapon capable of firing HESH (High-Explosive Squash Head) rounds and three types of APFSDS (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) shells. Its most advanced APFSDS round can penetrate over 560 mm of armor at close range, allowing it to defeat nearly any target on the battlefield.

The Challenger 2 series is known for its modest mobility, and the up-armored 2F variant performs even worse in this regard. While it’s not as sluggish as mid-20th-century heavy tanks, modern MBTs will easily outpace it. Commanders should therefore avoid long crossings over open terrain, where the Challenger 2 is most vulnerable.

The Challenger 2’s excellent protection and powerful armament make it a strong choice for defensive play or urban combat, where mobility is less critical.
