[Coming Soon] BMPT “Terminator”: Armor and Missiles

The Big and Medium trophies contain a fire-support vehicle with an unmanned turret, twin autocannons, and ATGMs.

Historical Note

The Tank Support Fighting Vehicle (BMPT), later designated the “Terminator”, emerged from combat lessons in Afghanistan and Chechnya. These conflicts revealed an urgent need for a vehicle capable of effectively neutralizing enemy infantry armed with man-portable anti-tank systems and grenade launchers. Standard tank guns proved ill-suited for such engagements, while conventional infantry fighting vehicles offered insufficient protection for the task

Development of the BMPT began in the mid-1980s, using the chassis of the T-72A tank as its foundation. State trials were successfully completed in 2006, after which the vehicle was recommended for serial production, this time built around the more modern T-90. Mass production commenced in 2011, though the first serial Terminators entered service not with Russia, but with the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. The Russian Army itself did not officially adopt the BMPT until August 2017.

BMPT (Rank XIII)

Brief Overview

  • Strengths: Unmanned turret armed with dual 30 mm cannons and ATGMs; robust hull armor.
  • Weaknesses: Modest forward speed, critically low reverse speed, and a limited missile ammunition supply.
  • Role in battle: A versatile and highly survivable fighting vehicle, equally capable of spearheading active engagements and providing reliable support to allies.

In battle

The upcoming War Thunder Mobile update introduces a truly unique fighting vehicle built for one purpose: direct tank support on the battlefield. Constructed on the chassis of a main battle tank and fitted with an unmanned turret, twin 30 mm autocannons, and powerful guided missiles – the BMPT "Terminator" arrives as a formidable Rank XIII combat vehicle!

The BMPT is built on the T-90 tank chassis, inheriting exceptional survivability for its class. The hull shrugs off fire from small-caliber autocannons with ease, even from the sides. Integrated Relikt ERA blocks, combined with slat armor surrounding the engine-transmission compartment, provide strong protection against missile strikes. Survivability is further bolstered by the unmanned turret, which keeps all five crew members sheltered behind tank-grade armor well below the roofline. That said, armor-piercing rounds from tank cannons remain a genuine threat – a reminder that the Terminator, formidable as it is, is far from invincible.

Firepower stands as the BMPT's second undeniable advantage. The twin 30 mm cannons prove effective well beyond light vehicles with armor-piercing belts, they can threaten tanks from the side and rear. The Terminator's most lethal weapon, however, is its guided missile armament from the 9M120 family. Up to four ATGMs can be carried into battle, available with either high-explosive fragmentation or tandem warheads.

Alongside its inherited protection, the BMPT also draws its mobility from the T-90, for better and for worse. Forward speed is adequate, if unremarkable by the standards of its competitors. Reverse speed, however, is catastrophically slow – a critical weakness that shapes the Terminator's entire playstyle. It can act as a flanker and tank hunter, but if the first salvo fails to neutralize the target, the crew will find themselves in a precarious position with little room to retreat.

The Terminator excels in a second-line role, providing direct support to allied tanks. Its rapid-fire cannons pack enough punch to shield teammates from flanking light vehicles, while the powerful tandem missiles pose a serious threat to even the most advanced enemy armor.
