Historical Note

John S. Thach was born in Arkansas on April 19, 1905. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, he served aboard battleships for two years before becoming a naval aviator. Over the next decade, Thach distinguished himself as a test pilot, instructor, and expert in aerial gunnery.

In the 1940s, Thach was assigned to command the Third Fighting Squadron (VF-3). He went on to shoot down six Japanese aircraft, including three during a single mission in the Battle of Midway.

However, Thach earned lasting fame as an air combat strategist, developing tactics to counter the superior maneuverability of Japanese aircraft. His most well-known tactic, “Thach Weave”, allowed American F4F Wildcat pilots to successfully defend against the more agile A6M Zero fighters. Later, to defend against kamikaze attacks, Thach devised the effective “Big Blue Blanket” system.

In 1960, Thach was promoted to Vice Admiral and served as Deputy Chief of Naval Air Operations at the Pentagon, where he oversaw the development of the A-7 Corsair II. In recognition of his contributions, the Arkansas Aviation Historical Society inducted him into the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame in 1981.
