Historical Note

Born on March 6, 1913, Alexander Ivanovich Pokryshkin served throughout the entire Great Patriotic War. He completed over 650 combat sorties, participated in 157 air battles, and achieved 59 confirmed aerial victories. His extraordinary service culminated in August 1944, when he became the first three-time Hero of the Soviet Union.

"Height – speed – maneuver – fire!" this was the legendary ace's motto, his "thunderstorm formula". Alexander Pokryshkin developed unique air combat tactics, mastering sharp right turns, a maneuver most pilots avoided, making it highly effective and unexpected in battle.

In spring 1943, Pokryshkin's regiment received American P-39 Airacobra fighters through Lend-Lease. Alexander Ivanovich proposed modifications to the aircraft's weapon configuration, significantly enhancing its combat effectiveness.

Pilot A.I. Pokryshkin's achievements include the development of the "Kubanskaya etagerka" combat formation for fighter groups and the creation of a comprehensive pilot training system. He demonstrated the importance and effectiveness of his methods through his own exceptional performance.

In 1943, Alexander Pokryshkin received the United States' Distinguished Service Medal, one of its highest military honors. He continued to fly combat missions until spring 1945.
