Historical Note

In August 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps landed on the harsh, jungle-covered shores of Guadalcanal, their first major offensive in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Their goal was a nearly completed airfield being built by Japanese engineers, a site of immense strategic value. The Marines seized it with little resistance, securing a vital foothold. But the true battle was only beginning, as the island soon became the decisive battleground for control of the Pacific.

Guadalcanal turned into a war of attrition, with the next six months testing the endurance of both sides. Refusing to surrender, the Japanese command planned a large-scale operation in November to land 7,000 troops on the island for a decisive counteroffensive. To secure the convoy’s approach, the Japanese fleet sent a powerful squadron led by the battleships Hiei and Kirishima.

On the night of November 12–13, an American task force of cruisers and destroyers confronted a superior Japanese fleet. In the darkness of Ironbottom Sound, one of the most chaotic and brutal naval battles in history erupted. Ships closed to near point-blank distance, trading devastating fire. Though the Americans suffered heavy losses, their resistance ultimately disrupted the enemy’s plans.

The decisive blow came on the night of November 14–15, when the Japanese again tried to land their convoy and resume the bombardment, this time with the battleship Kirishima. They were met by the newest American battleships, Washington and South Dakota.

These battles dealt the Imperial Navy critical losses and cost it the strategic initiative, marking the start of the Allies’ unstoppable advance across the Pacific.
