[Coming Soon] BM Oplot-T: The Siamese Heavy Legionnaire

The Big and Medium Trophies contain a powerful MBT from the Japanese tech tree with unique armor and mobility.

Historical Note

The T-84 "Oplot" (Object 478DU9) was developed at the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau as a further evolution of the T-80UD main battle tank, and was adopted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on February 8, 2000. The vehicle received a new 1,200 hp 6TD-2 engine, a modernized welded turret, an improved fire control system, and a new generation of integrated explosive reactive armor. A reverse gear was also added to the transmission, increasing reverse speed to 30 km/h.

The Object 478DU9-1 modification further enhanced protection through additional Duplet ERA blocks and introduced a panoramic commander's sight, the PNK-6.

The export variant, the BM Oplot-T (Object 478DU9-T), was produced for Thailand between 2013 and 2018, with a total of 49 vehicles delivered. This variant differed from the base version through the addition of an auxiliary power unit, modified side skirts, a bustle ammunition rack in the turret, and an additional ladder on the hull rear.

BM Oplot-T (Rank XIV)

Brief Overview

  • Strengths: New APFSDS round and tandem ATGM, high survivability thanks to Duplet ERA and Varta soft-kill APS, and good mobility.
  • Weaknesses: Cramped internal layout.
  • Role in battle: A highly effective MBT with no glaring weaknesses – mobile, well-protected, and equipped with high-penetration rounds and an autoloader.

In Battle

One of the finest tanks in Japan's new ground forces research tree is the Thai main battle tank BM Oplot-T. This export variant of the Ukrainian T-84 stands among the most advanced representatives of the T-80 family, combining sophisticated protection, powerful ammunition, modern electronics, and improved mobility – all covered in detail below.

Protection comes first. T-80s are already well regarded for their armor, but the Oplot raises the bar further. Engineers extensively reworked the turret and hull design, incorporating the Duplet ERA system. These blocks not only significantly improve resistance to shaped-charge ammunition but also offer meaningful protection against kinetic rounds. The sides are covered by large-area ERA screens, while the hull front and turret have received additional reinforcement.

The tank is also equipped with the Varta soft-kill APS, which disrupts the guidance of SACLOS ATGMs and causes them to deviate from their flight path. Inside the hull sits a carousel autoloader with 28 rounds, supplemented by additional ammunition stowage in the turret bustle. The ammunition selection has been expanded considerably: alongside familiar Soviet rounds, the Oplot now carries the tandem GP125 ATGMs and the top-tier BTA4 APFSDS round with over 500 mm of penetration.

Mobility deserves special mention. The new engine propels this substantial vehicle to a top speed of 70 km/h, impressive in itself, but the transmission is the real standout: reverse speed reaches 30 km/h, a remarkable figure for a vehicle rooted in the T-72/T-80 lineage. Neutral steering is also available. In terms of mobility, the BM Oplot-T ranks among the finest MBTs in the game.

The BM Oplot-T arrives at Rank XIV in the Japanese research tree – a powerful, modern, and highly unconventional tank that will open up entirely new tactical possibilities for its commanders.
