Historical Note

Following the end of the Cold War, Sweden recognized the need to replace its ageing Strv 104 and Strv 103 tanks. The American M1A2 Abrams, German Leopard 2, and French Leclerc were all evaluated as candidates for the new main battle tank role. After lengthy trials, the Leopard 2 was selected.

In 1994, Sweden leased 160 Leopard 2A4s (designated Strv 121) and ordered 120 new vehicles that would become the Strv 122. The Swedish variant was an improved Leopard 2A5 adapted to national requirements: composite armor screens were mounted over the base armor, providing an additional layer of protection. The tanks underwent several subsequent modernization programs, and the baseline variant received the designation Strv 122A.

Brief Overview

• Strengths: Very good mobility, reinforced frontal hull and turret armor, and excellent APFSDS rounds.
• Weaknesses: Vulnerable side profile and exposed gun mantlet.
• Role in battle: One of the finest Leopard 2A5 variants in the game – fast and dynamic, with enhanced protection and powerful ammunition.

In Battle

The Strv 122A's defining distinction from its German counterpart is enhanced protection. This modification introduced composite armor modules for the hull front and upper glacis, and the frontal turret projection was reinforced accordingly. The turret ring became less vulnerable, though a small weak spot remains around the gun mantlet – hits there are extremely dangerous.

The armament is the familiar 120 mm Rheinmetall smoothbore cannon. In this loadout, the HEAT round is replaced by an HE round, and two types of APFSDS are also available – including the DM53, which confidently penetrates most opponents at its rank.

Mobility is one of the Strv 122A's clear strengths. A powerful engine delivers a high power-to-weight ratio, allowing the tank to accelerate quickly and maneuver with ease. Reverse speed is also commendable – sufficient to withdraw behind cover promptly after firing.

Reinforced armor, excellent mobility, and a powerful gun make the Strv 122A a formidable opponent in any combat situation. As with any Leopard-lineage tank, staying mobile is staying alive – the Strv 122A is no exception.

Constant tactical awareness is essential: never allow opponents to work around your flanks or rear, where the armor cannot reliably stop armor-piercing rounds.

The Premium variant is an extra tank for your hangar! The premium tank maintains the same performance as the standard variant, though it comes in a unique camouflage. With this premium tank you’ll be able to enjoy faster Silver Lion and Research Point gains, and earn some Golden Eagles in your battles.
