[Coming Soon] La Fayette: First Stealth Frigate

The Big and Medium Trophies contain the first French missile ship – an invisible force capable of delivering a devastating salvo.

Historical Note

The La Fayette-class frigates known in the French Navy as Frégate Légère Furtive ("light stealth frigate"), were the world's first series-produced warships designed from the ground up around stealth technology. The French Navy ordered five such frigates in 1988. The lead ship, La Fayette, was commissioned in 1996, with the last entering service in October 2001. The class was conceived as a versatile platform for operations in low-to-medium intensity conflict zones, the protection of France's exclusive economic zone, and participation in humanitarian missions.

Unlike larger and more expensive warships, the La Fayette class was built around an economical diesel power plant, a reduced crew complement, and most significantly, a radically new hull and superstructure architecture. Sloped surfaces, radar-absorbent materials, and a carefully considered layout work together to significantly reduce radar, thermal, acoustic, and magnetic signatures. Three French frigates (La Fayette, Courbet, and Aconit) underwent a modernization program in the early 2020s that extended their service life to 35 years and expanded their combat capabilities. Modified versions of the class are also in service with the navies of Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

La Fayette (Rank VII)

Brief Overview

  • Strengths: Exocet MM40 and Crotale guided missiles; stealth technology that increases enemy targeting time; 100 mm gun.
  • Weaknesses: Average speed and no CIWS.
  • Role in battle: The first French missile ship in the game, armed with powerful new weapons. Its low radar signature makes it harder for enemies to achieve and maintain a missile lock.

In Battle

France receives its first missile ship in War Thunder Mobile – meet the La Fayette, the world's first series-produced stealth frigate. New weapons, and low-observability features,: let's take a closer look.

One of the La Fayette's defining characteristics is its stealth technology. The game already features vehicles with a reduced radar signature – among them the Soviet Pr. 903 Lun-class, which takes enemies longer to lock onto with missile weapons. The La Fayette's passive defense operates on the same principle: the hull and superstructure's distinctive geometry, combined with a clean deck free of unnecessary equipment, make the ship significantly less visible to enemy radar.

Each salvo carries a total of ten guided missiles: six Exocet MM40 anti-ship missiles and four fast-firing Crotale surface-to-air missiles. Note that in the game, the Crotale's proximity fuse is disabled, allowing it to engage surface targets as well.

The La Fayette is less suited to close-quarters combat than many of its counterparts – it has no torpedo tubes. A 100 mm automatic gun is mounted at the bow, however, ensuring the ship is far from defenseless at short range.

The frigate's most notable limitations are its modest top speed and the absence of active anti-missile defense systems. The La Fayette relies entirely on the passive protection of its stealthy hull and must operate close to cover. Advance to attack, fire your salvo, and withdraw to reload before enemy launchers can reacquire you.

Premium version of the La Fayette (Rank VII)

In the Ship Campaign, only one ship can be taken into battle. Because of this, the Premium version of any ship is not a separate unit, but it completely replaces the standard “gray” version. After obtaining the premium version, the blueprints for the standard version of the ship will disappear from the store and trophies, and the ship itself will become unavailable in trophies and jackpots.

Differences between the Premium and Standard versions:

  • The ability to get gold after a battle, according to the daily limit;
  • Unique premium camouflage;
  • Fully unlocked upgrades in the Arsenal;
  • The ship gets the maximum crew level immediately.
