Historical Note

The destroyer JS Takanami (DD-110) became the lead ship of the Takanami class. Her keel was laid on April 25, 2000, and she was launched on July 27, 2001, before being commissioned on March 12, 2003, and joining the 1st Escort Flotilla based in Yokosuka.

In August 2004, Takanami was deployed to the Indian Ocean to support coalition forces in Afghanistan. On her return in December 2004, the ship took part in relief operations following the earthquake and tsunami in Thailand. In 2009, she was dispatched to the coast of Somalia for counter-piracy operations, during which she escorted 283 vessels.

In 2011, Takanami contributed to disaster relief efforts following the earthquake and tsunami in the Tōhoku region. In 2020, she was deployed to the Middle East for intelligence gathering and the protection of oil tanker shipping lanes. In 2022, Takanami participated in the RIMPAC exercises, and in 2026 she conducted joint drills with the Indian frigate Surat. Takanami continues to serve actively in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force to this day.

Brief Overview

• Strengths: Ten guided missiles per salvo, the largest ASROC salvo in the game at six missiles, a 127 mm gun, torpedoes, and a large anti-missile defense coverage area.
• Weaknesses: Relatively large dimensions and a long ASROC reload time.
• Role in battle: A highly effective missile ship combining the largest anti-submarine rocket salvo in the game with solid point-defense capability.

In battle

Arriving at Rank VII of the Ship Campaign is the JDS Takanami – Japan's new top-tier missile destroyer. A devastating missile salvo, a versatile secondary armament suite, and a sophisticated anti-missile defense system make this a formidable modern warship in every respect.

The JDS Takanami's primary striking force is her guided missile armament. Each salvo delivers four Type 90 anti-ship missiles alongside six RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles.

Takanami's anti-submarine capabilities deserve particular attention. She employs RUM-139 VL ASROC anti-submarine rockets at a record six missiles per salvo – the highest in the game. For close-quarters engagements, her commander also has two triple torpedo tubes and a 127 mm automatic cannon at their disposal.

While not the smallest ship in her class, Takanami is agile – her speed and turning radius allow for active maneuvering combat between cover. Like other top-tier missile ships, she carries no armor protection. Her anti-missile defense more than compensates, however: two CIWS mounts at the bow and stern provide nearly 360-degree protection against incoming missiles for a short window after activation.

Without exaggeration, the JDS Takanami stands as one of the finest missile ships in the game. She will prove particularly effective at shielding the team from submarine threats, while also carrying decisive firepower in conventional engagements against other missile-armed vessels.

Premium version of the JDS Takanami (Rank VII)

In the Ship Campaign, only one ship can be taken into battle. Because of this, the Premium version of any ship is not a separate unit, but it completely replaces the standard “gray” version. After obtaining the premium version, the blueprints for the standard version of the ship will disappear from the store and trophies, and the ship itself will become unavailable in trophies and jackpots.

Differences between the Premium and Standard versions:

• The ability to get gold after a battle, according to the daily limit;
• Unique premium camouflage;
• Fully unlocked upgrades in the Arsenal;
• The ship gets the maximum crew level immediately.

The JDS Takanami (Rank VII) can be obtained in War Thunder Mobile (WTM) from Medium or Big Trophies in the Ship Campaign or purchased from the in-game store using Season Bonds at the start of the new Season.
